Tata Motors is all set to bring back one of its most loved nameplates – the Tata Sierra – but this time, in a modern, tech-rich, and versatile avatar. First showcased at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, the Tata Sierra New caught everyone’s attention with its futuristic styling and a nostalgic nod to the original model. The production-spec version is expected to hit Indian roads by October 2025, with the Tata Sierra EV to follow towards the end of the financial year. Let’s take a detailed look at what this all-new Sierra promises to offer.
Design: Heritage Meets Modernity
The new Tata Sierra breaks away from the past while still keeping its roots intact. Unlike the original three-door layout of the Tata Sierra old, the upcoming model will sport a practical five-door setup. Its overall silhouette remains boxy, reminiscent of the iconic design, but the surfaces are smoother, proportions more balanced, and detailing far more refined.
Up front, the SUV features a high-mounted bonnet, a bold gloss-black grille, vertically-split LED headlamps, and a wide air dam that houses ADAS sensors. A full-width LED DRL gives it a connected and sophisticated appearance. The sides get clean lines, flush-fitting door handles, roof rails, a body-coloured B-pillar, and a blacked-out C-pillar – all contributing to a planted and premium stance. At the rear, the Sierra will feature a clamshell tailgate and a wraparound rear window that offers a visual connection to the original model.
Interior & Features: Designed Around You
Inside, the Tata Sierra interior is expected to be loaded with modern-day comforts and connected car technologies. Spy images and early previews reveal a cabin with a layered design theme, premium upholstery, and a panoramic sunroof that brings in an airy feel.
A highlight feature will be the triple-screen setup — a touchscreen infotainment display, a digital instrument cluster, and a dedicated screen for the front passenger. Other expected features include:
- Ventilated and powered front seats
- Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
- JBL sound system with Dolby Atmos
- Wireless charger
- Heads-Up Display (HUD)
- Built-in dashcam
- Multi-zone climate control
- Ambient lighting
- Auto-dimming IRVM
- Floating centre console with generous storage
In terms of safety, Level-2 ADAS is expected to be standard in higher variants. This would include adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, blind-spot detection, 360-degree camera, ABS with EBD, tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), multiple airbags, and electronic stability control (ESC).
Engine Options: Petrol, Diesel, and Electric
The Tata Sierra New will be launched in both ICE and electric versions. For the ICE variant, Tata is expected to offer the following engines:
- 1.5L NA Petrol Engine (for base variants, to keep prices competitive)
- 1.5L Turbo Petrol Engine – Expected to generate 170 bhp and 280 Nm
- 2.0L Diesel Engine – Could offer up to 170 bhp and 350 Nm torque
Transmission choices are likely to include both manual and automatic gearboxes.
On the electric side, the Tata Sierra EV is likely to borrow technology from the Tata Harrier EV. It may come with 65kWh and 75kWh battery options:
- 65kWh Battery: Rear-wheel drive setup
- 75kWh Battery: Option for RWD and AWD
- Expected Range: Up to 627 km (MIDC claimed)
In higher trims, Tata could even offer a Quad Wheel Drive system, which it debuted with the Harrier EV.
Price and Rivals
The new Tata Sierra price is expected to start at around ₹13 lakh (ex-showroom) for the base petrol variant. The EV variants, with advanced tech and longer range, will likely command a premium. Although official pricing is yet to be announced, the Tata Sierra EV price could go beyond ₹25 lakh for the top-end AWD variants.
The Sierra will compete in the lifestyle SUV space, going up against the Mahindra Thar, Maruti Jimny, and potentially the Force Gurkha. However, its monocoque construction and tech-loaded features give it a more urban, refined edge — something closer to a Land Rover Defender-like persona rather than a hardcore off-roader.
Tata Sierra Launch Timeline
- Tata Sierra EV Launch Date: Late 2025
- Tata Sierra ICE Launch Date: Early 2026
- Expected Availability: Near Diwali season for initial variants
With both Tata Sierra ICE and Tata Sierra EV spotted testing in near-production form, the official launch seems closer than ever.
A Comeback That Matters
The Tata Sierra was always more than just a car—it was a symbol of aspiration in the ’90s. Its unique design, big rear glass panel, and commanding road presence gave it a cult following. Now, in 2025, Tata Motors is rewriting its legacy with a product that blends nostalgia with future-readiness.
Be it the attention to design detail, tech-first interiors, versatile powertrain options, or the emotional connection it evokes – the Tata Sierra New is shaping up to be more than just another SUV launch. It’s a statement.
